It is with great sadness that Chadlington Bowls Club learnt of the recent passing of Cyril Smart.

Cyril had been a stalwart of the club for many years, both as a player and a committee member. In addition to being a club member, he was a participant in the various County competitions, playing regularly in the County pairs with his son Carl and latterly in the County triples with Carl and his grandson Hedley.

This trio of Smarts also formed the backbone of one of the rinks for Chadlington in the Oxfordshire men’s league. Although suffering with various ailments, Cyril was turning out for the club when possible right up until the “lock down” put a stop to organised sports.

His competitive nature did not diminish over the years and nor did his lifelong support  of his beloved Arsenal.  He and his family were great supporters of the Horse Racing Nights that were held at the bowls club, but you always knew what horse Cyril had sponsored, as more often than not it would be called “Arsene” or “Wenger”.

Our thoughts at the club go out to Cyril’s family and friends at this time, but we remember the sunny evenings we spent in his company on the green.
