County Triples Quarter Finals
Carterton and Headington progress to the Semi-Finals
Triples Quarter Finals took place last night at Headington Bowls Club. An excellent evening
for Bowls; full sun and a light breeze greeted the players and spectators. The green in marvellous
condition which proved appropriate with the standard of bowls from the players on the green.
On rink one it was South Oxford's Keith Mobley up against Tim Jupp from Carterton.Tim's three
were straight out of the block's and were 12 shots up after 7 ends. Steady progress by Keith moved
the score to 12-6 after 11 ends then Tim's three, under skip Craig Morphet and Steve Aldren as lead
pulled away to win the match 20-8.
Rink two put Headington's Mark Charlett against Will Parker from West Witney an even start by
both teams and it was 4-4 after 5 ends. Then unfortunately the wheels came off from West Witney
and some outstanding  bowling from Ian Henwood, Jason King and Mark moved the score onto 18-4
on the 3th end for West Witney to call an end to the match.
Rink three's match was between Paul Sharman from Carterton and Howard Watts from the Home
Club Headington. Paul got away to an excellent start and was leading 12-2 after 9 ends but that
score did not totally reflect the standard of bowling from both triples. Howard pulled back to 14-10
after 16 ends but a three from the Carterton Boys Joe Justin, David Clanfield and Paul made it
17-10 and the end of the match.Outstanding bowling from both triple's made an excellent quarter final.
On rink four Alan Prew's  Banbury Borough triples of Himself ,Aj Docherty and Mark Sykes were up
against  Headington's  Nick Rae-Welsh ,Ray Gaskins and Sam Watts. This match made for the
spectators on the night compulsive viewing nip and tuck all the way to the 8th end with the score
5-5. It was then Nick who pulled away to lead 13-5 after 11 ends but a 5 and the a 3 on the next two
ends from Alan made it 13-13 game on.With all the other matches now finished and the green empty
all eyes were on this match. On the 16th end the score was 16-16 but a short jack from the Banbury Boys
and a few lose bowls allowed Nick to pick up a 3 to lead 19-16 with one end to be played.
Then probably the longest end of the entire evening with Banbury needing three to take it to an extra end
it was shot for shot to both teams. It was down to both skip's with their last two bowls each to decide
the result dispite Alan's best efforts Nick's two proved more decisive and Headington picked up a final 2
shots to win the match 21-16.
Which now means its Mark up against Nick both from Headington and Paul against Tim both from                                                      Carterton in the County Semi-Finals at South Oxford.
A  great evening of bowls a HUGE thanks to the Headington Club for hoasting the event an abundance
of Burgers and Hot Dogs on offer and liquid refreshment flowing to all of us there on a hot sunny evening.
Must say a word of Thanks to  Dennis Crook and his Team for producing an excellent bowling surface.
