Bowls Oxfordshire

The Under-25s section is an integral part of the County Association; all games are thus governed by the same rules and codes as other County fixtures. Clubs are asked to inform the Under-25s Manager (Steve Gilkes) if they have young players on their books, and it is particularly hoped that Association members will support the Under-25s by attending these games.

Watlington B.C. Under 25s Day 28/09/2008

Thirty six young bowlers (27 male and 9 female) from all over Oxfordshire travelled to Watlington Bowls Club on Sunday 28th September to take part in an Under 25s day, the first of its kind in the county.

Players ranging in age and experience from Jon Philpot, 25, an established Middleton Cup player to Jody Buckett, 8, from Shiplake who had never played in a game previously, competed within drawn teams in a "round robin" on the South Oxfordshire green in some of the best weather seen this season.

The event, sponsored by Family Investments of Brighton and supported by the local Mid Counties Co-operative store, was organised by the club in order to promote Bowls amongst young people and to assist with building Oxfordshire junior teams of the future. (The county did not field a men’s under 25 team during 2008)

Each team played eight six end games with the winners being determined by the greatest shot difference gained over the day. Coaching was provided throughout the day by Glyn Coggon, the Oxfordshire County Coach.

The winning team with a score of +39 was skipped by Shane Cooper of Cotswold B.C. with Joe Woodward (South Oxford), Jonathan Gore (Oxford City & County) and Josh Hughes (Shiplake). Witney Mills bowler Chris Miles’ four of himself, Sam White (Bicester), Katie Bland (Shiplake) and Emma Dalton (Oxford City & County) took second place with Dan Wakeman (Carterton) skipping the third placed team of Jack Barnes (Watlington), Dan Lewis (Shiplake) and Joe Glenn (Oxford City & County).

Medals were presented to the three teams by Keith Meeres of Family Investments, John O’Shea, Oxfordshire County President and Gail Hunter, Manager of the England junior ladies team.

Whilst the day consisted of a competition, the emphasis was as much on enjoyment and team building as it was on winning. The sport of bowls was the real winner and with the exemplary attitude and ability shown by all players present, the future of the game in Oxfordshire has the potential to be very bright.
